This article provides a cursory perusal of some of the arguments that have been used to discredit the ‘spread by the sword’ narrative and examines three cases of forced conversion to Islam in history: the spread of Islam in South Asia, the Ottomans’ devshirme system, and Imam Yahya’s “Orphans’ Decree” in Yemen.
